Museum Sarajevo 1878-1918

It is dedicated to the period of Austro-Hungarian rule and the development of Sarajevo into a modern urban center. Through authentic exhibits, documents, and interior reconstructions, visitors discover the story of daily life, culture, and political turmoil in the city at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

It was founded in 1948.

It is much more than a place for storing objects; it is a living witness to Sarajevo's transformation from an oriental city into a modern European center. Its collections connect the political, cultural, and social history of the Austro-Hungarian period, providing a unique insight into the city's development at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Visitors can explore the daily life of Sarajevo residents through authentic objects, photographs, and documents, experience the spirit of the era through reconstructed interiors, and relive key moments, such as the Sarajevo Assassination. Each room in the museum brings to life a story from a time when Sarajevo experienced its first major urban and cultural boom.

Experience at the museum:

  • Assassination in Sarajevo

The museum displays the original "FN Browning" pistol used by Gavrilo Princip to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, along with the uniform and car from the event.

  • Sarajevo under Austro-Hungarian Rule

Authentic documents, city maps, and photographs illustrate the city's urbanization and modernization — the introduction of electric lighting, trams, and new architectural styles.

  • Art and Culture of Transition

The exhibition features everyday objects, furniture, and clothing from the Austro-Hungarian period, evoking life in bourgeois and merchant homes of that time.

  • Voice of the past through objects

Each exhibit – from personal documents and photographs to small souvenirs – tells an authentic story about the people who shaped Sarajevo between 1878 and 1918.
