The siege of Sarajevo began on the night of April 4-5, 1992, and ended on February 29, 1996.
It was a four-year blockade of the capital, the "Siege of Sarajevo", which lasted 1425 days, one of the longest in the history of warfare.

Sarajevo 1425 Days:

  • 3,777 shells

    On average, 329 shells fell on Sarajevo daily. A record number of 3,777 shells fired was recorded on July 22, 1993.

  • 11,541 people

    In Sarajevo, 11,541 people were killed, including 1,600 children. More than 50,000 people sustained minor or serious injuries.

  • 3,102 artworks

    During the siege, 3102 artworks were created, 48 concerts were held, and over 170 exhibitions took place in Sarajevo. Sarajevo theaters staged 182 premieres, seen by over half a million Sarajevans.

  • February 5

    Every February 5, Sarajevo remembers the Markale market massacre, when 68 people were killed and 144 wounded by a mortar shell fired by the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS).
